The project

Our customer, a world leader in the design, manufacturing and marketing of motorized recreational vehicles, teamed up with Creaform to develop a new side-by-side vehicle. Working closely with the customer’s industrial design and engineering teams, Creaform’s mandate was to convert and model in 3D the vehicle parts using CATIA V5. This included many components, such as the body panels, console, dashboard, footrest, structural components, and many other functional mechanisms.

Starting with the scan of a 1:1 clay model mock-up, Creaform had to scan and reverse engineer the vehicle in order to generate an aesthetical and high-quality “A” surface.

In a second phase, the Creaform team had to work with 2D sketches and guidelines to integrate the design modifications requested by the customer and make sure all the parts would fit perfectly once assembled.

Once all the 3D models were approved, Creaform had to convert these into 2D drawings, which included GD&T. From these, suppliers were able to support us and the customer in the development of the first prototype to make sure the different parts met the expected high-quality standards.

Services provided

  • Reverse engineering of the clay model
  • Mechanical design
  • Structural component design with stress validations from FEA, including non-linear analysis for high deformation and polymer materials
  • Industrial design 2D sketch interpretation and conversion into 3D models
  • Plastic component design, including draft angle validation
  • Advanced surface modeling
  • Die cast component design

Tools and Methods Used

Based on the client’s needs, Creaform used the following tools and methods:

  • 3D scanning
  • CATIA V5 Freestyle
  • CATIA V5 GSD
  • CATIA V5 Sheet metal
  • Femap
  • NEi Nastran
